The administration has made little secret of its near-total reliance on drone operations to fight the war on terror. The ironies abound. Candidate Obama campaigned on narrowing presidential wartime power, closing Guantanamo Bay, trying terrorists in civilian courts, ending enhanced interrogation, and moving away from a wartime approach to terrorism toward a criminal-justice approach. Mr. Obama has avoided these vexing detention issues simply by depriving terrorists of all of their rights—by killing them. (emphasis added)

for full OpEd:

FYI; John Yoo worked for the Bush DOJ, and was one of those targeted by the Obama administration regarding their legal memorandums that greenlighted what the Obama White House has deemed “Torture”.

As if we didn’t already know this……………………..

So, Barack Obama has backtracked on the closing of the terrorist prison in Guantanomo Bay, and now, he has changed his position on the use of military tribunals for those being held at GITMO.

But, the Left is silent. Michael Moore has made no comments. Markos at the Daily Kos….. barely a peep. What gives?

Coakley to Fundraisers: ‘If I Don’t Win, 2010 Is Going To Be Hell For Democrats.’

One of the Campaign Spot’s multitude of spies — yes, we have a separate Directorate of Intelligence – infiltrated Martha Coakley’s fundraiser in Washington, D.C. tonight.

My spy passes along word that Coakley herself fired up the crowd with this inspiring line: “If I don’t win, 2010 is going to be hell for Democrats… Every Democrat will have a competitive race.”

Her defeat was also described as “Waterloo for health care.”

I guess they have access to the Weather Channel at GITMO:

The Irony of all Ironies: Lawyer of Gitmo Detainees Says They’ll Likely Sue to Stay In Guantanamo…

Buried in a blog item by Newsweek’s ace reporter Michael Isikoff is a bombshell. Appararently lawyers for Guantanamo detainees want to keep their clients in Guantanamo, rather than transfer them to the Obama administration’s proposed new prison in Illinois:

But the final irony is that many of the detainees may not even want to be transferred to Thomson and could conceivably even raise their own legal roadblocks to allow them to stay at Gitmo.

Falkoff notes that many of his clients, while they clearly want to go home, are at least being held under Geneva Convention conditions in Guantánamo. At Thomson, he notes, the plans call for them to be thrown into the equivalent of a “supermax” security prison under near-lockdown conditions.

“As far as our clients are concerned, it’s probably preferable for them to remain at Guantánamo,” he says.

The strident left-wing critiques of the Guantanamo facility have all centered around the fact that detainees there are horribly mistreated and conditions unbearable. But when push comes to shove, it would seem concerns about Guantanamo are overblown, and the prisoners there know that being held under the Geneva conventions outside the U.S. is much preferable to a maximum security prison in the U.S.

From America’s Right:

For those who haven’t seen it already, there’s a piece over at a blog called “emptywheel” entitled Obama’s Royal Scam and The Iron Fist of Rahm that everyone should take a good, long look at.

I dare you to read it and not to smile. Here’s a snippet:

Audacity To Hope. Change We Can Believe In. Rule of Law. Accountability. Freedom From Lobbyists and Special Interests. Privacy. Harm From Illegal Surveillance. Constitutional Scholar. Transparency. Predatory Business Practices. Closing Guantanamo. Withdrawing From Iraq and Afghanistan.

These are but some of the major buzzwords, issues and concepts Barack Obama based his candidacy and campaign on to convince the American electorate to sweep him in to office. Mr. Obama, however, has gone significantly in the opposite direction on each and every one since taking office. As Frank Rich noted, there is a growing “suspicion that Obama’s brilliant presidential campaign was as hollow as Tiger’s public image — a marketing scam…”.

NEW YORK  —  The five men facing trial in the Sept. 11 attacks will plead not guilty so that they can air their criticisms of U.S. foreign policy, the lawyer for one of the defendants said Sunday.

Scott Fenstermaker, the lawyer for accused terrorist Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, said the men would not deny their role in the 2001 attacks but “would explain what happened and why they did it.”

SLIDESHOW: 9/11 Terror Detainees Face Trial in N.Y.

The U.S. Justice Department announced earlier this month that Ali and four other men accused of murdering nearly 3,000 people in the nation’s deadliest terrorist attack will face a civilian federal trial just blocks from the World Trade Center site.

The last seven directors of the CIA, covereing 35 years, have sent a letter to President Barack Obama, objecting to the Justice Department’s investigation of the CIA and GITMO Interrogations.

The seven Directors have expressed their concerns over the effect that the investigations will have on our long term security and future ability to do their job.

As Obama had expresses earlier, he did not want to look “back”, but obviously his Attorney General sees things differently.
