David Letterman cites his ignorance about which daughter was with Governor Palin at the Yankees game last week, which led to his jokes about Palin’s daughter(s) and Alex Rodriguez and Elliott Spitzer. Knowing that Elliott Spitzer had a pencahnt for young prostitutes, this “joke” was above all the most highly offensive, not just to Gov. Palin’s 14 year old daughter Willow, but to young women in general. Yet, in his apologies, and in the defense statments issued by the likes of the Rev. Al Sharpton, they are focusing on the Palin daughters, and ,issing the broader point that his joke was as offensive to a class of people, young women, as Don Imus’ joke about the Rutgers Women’s basketball team was.

To that extent, a concerted effort has been underway since last Monday night to hold David Letterman and CBS accountable. To her credit, Gov. Palin has declined to appear on the “Late Show”, and has scaled back her comments about the incident. But that has not stopped various groups from pursuing Letterman and the CBS sponsors. As of this morning, Embassy Suites, which advertises on CBS, but not on Letterman specifically, has pulled their ads. Hellmans’ Mayonnaise and Olive Garden have also announced that they are cancelling their ads as well. At the taping for tonight’s show, the crowd has gathered to protest outside the Ed Sullivan Theater.

MSNBC not happy with John Ziegler:

And an angry husband and FATHER responds, as well as Gov. Palin:

The Palins released their own statements today, with special emphasis noted in the message from Todd, a poppa grizzly who sums it up so well:

“Any ‘jokes’ about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it too,” Todd Palin, First Gentleman of Alaska, 6/10/09.

“Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make any such comments about anyone else’s daughter): ‘Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/New York entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contribute to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation by minors by older men who use and abuse others,” Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, 6/10/09
