I am always amazed in the grand scheme of politics at the pandering to this group or that group that occurs, and yes, it occurs on all sides of the political affiliations.
But now as the Democratic Party will, for the first time, include “Marriage Equality” in the planks of the party platform, I believe that the LGBT community should be angry at the President and at the Democratic party for this pandering. In the state that most recently put the issue to the VOTERS, more than 60% voted down the idea of same-sex marriage. Similar percentages have occurred in virtually every state where the voters have been asked to weigh in on the issue.
The concept of same-sex marriage is only recognized on a legal basis in those states where the judicial system or the legislature has acted; and in some of those states, the voters have then taken to the ballot box with a referendum to reverse the actions of the legislature, as is presently in the works in Maryland.
As I have said before on this site, while I do not believe in the gay lifestyle, it is not for me to judge. But I do not believe that the laws of society, and in fact the laws of the natural order of life, should be changed to accomodate the 2% of our population. No, those of the LGBT community should NOT BE DISCRIMINATED against in the workplace, etc. It is not discrimination to say that marriage is between one man and one woman. Any other coupling of the human race is something other than marriage.
Someone recently said that just because marriage has been deemed between one man and one woman since the beginning of time does not mean that it should be changed with the passage of time…… they said, after all, the world was always thought to be flat, and it took many years to convince the people that it was really round. Here is the probem with that thought process: The world really is round!!!
For my friends in the LGBT community……. while I would prefer you not vote Democrats, I urge you to vote, but do not vote for the Democrats just because they have put this issue into their platform. It truly does not mean that this issue is going anywhere yet. Maybe in the next generation, or the one after that, but I don’t think it’s happening now!
