The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights has warned Americans not to elect Republican Mitt Romney in next month’s presidential election, saying that doing so would be “a democratic mandate for torture.”

The UN’s Ben Emmerson was referring to Romney’s refusal to rule out the use of waterboarding in interrogating terror detainees, a practice that President Barack Obama has ended.

Colin Perkel of The Canadian Press reported Emmerson’s remarks from a symposium in Toronto on the impact of 9/11 on human rights:

“The re-introduction of torture under a Romney administration would significantly increase the threat levels to (Americans) at home and abroad,” Emmerson said.

“Such a policy, if adopted, would expose the American people to risks the Obama administration is not currently exposing them to.”

U.S. intelligence services were able to pinpoint Osama bin Laden’s location and carry out the successful mission to kill him in May 2011 based on information yielded during waterboarding of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and information from Al Qaeda operative Hassan Ghul, who was captured in Iraq in 2004.

Obama opposed both waterboarding and the Iraq War, without which bin Laden would not have been found.

As Mitt Romney prepares to take a few days away from the campaign trail to strategize with top and key advisors, the story breaks that he has narrowed down his list of potential VP picks, and that Secretary of State Condaleeza Rice is appearing to be his top choice:

From DRUDGE REPORT

ROMNEY NARROWS VP CHOICES; CONDI EMERGES AS FRONTRUNNER Thu Jul 12 2012 19:30:01 ET
**Exclusive**
Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, ‘Meet The VP’ — just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.
And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!
The timing of the announcement is now set for ‘coming weeks’.
MORE
It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney’s Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.
Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

In recent days, she emailed supporters:
“2012 is perhaps a turning point for the United States.”
“The upcoming elections loom as one of the most important in my lifetime,” she warned. “I’m very often asked to speak about our current foreign policy and the challenges that lie before us. However, we, as a country, are not going to be able to address any of those international challenges unless we first get our domestic house in order.”

Would this change the game? Would the polls move any, since most recent polls show Romney and Obama in an almost virtual tie?

With the first primary in the “midterm” election cycle underway in the great state of Illinois, with the possibility of the seat once held by the POTUS going Red in November, I am interested in what characteristics, views, issues, etc. that you look for in a candidate. I am interested in the views from all sides as to what would be the ideal candidate that would get your vote.

The Republican National Committee chose former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele to be its chairman after the 2008 elections. Since his appointment, Steele has been criticized and there have been attempts at undermining his leadership.

His latest flap involves his book promotion on the TV talk circuit. The book, entitled “Right Now:  A Twelve Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda” caught many top Republicans by surprise, unaware that the RNC Chairman had a book deal. Steele’s replies to his critics takes on an Obama-esque tone: “I am the Chairman. Deal with it“, basically telling the RNC to “shut up” unless they are firing him!

With total voter dissatisfaction among BOTH political parties, a growing need to court the independent voter, and the influential impact of the Tea Party movement that many on both sides tried to demean and belittle at first, the RNC cannot afford to have the Chairman speaking on the airwaves, making statements that undermine the efforts of the Republicans to forge a statement, a path and policy to restrengthen itself.

Thus, with Steele’s tumultuous tenure thus far, is it perhaps the right time to make a change to make sure the “Right” ideology is moving in the right direction. (Ok, perhaps that’s too many “Rights”).

The RNC should replace Steele with a spokesperson, a leader, who can hold their own in any setting. The RNC Chair should be held by someone whose political voice has the respect in the political community, on both sides. This person should be one who has shown that they have the background to support their views on the issues, such a foreign policy background. And this person should have a voice record that show that they are willing to support unpopular views that the left so freely attacks. The bottomline is that the RNC Chair needs a leader that can take the heat of criticism and defend the position.

The person, the voice that comes to my mind has used her foreign policy experience to defend the Bush Administration from its harshest critics. She can hold her own in the debate arena of the Sunday morning talk shows on the liberal mainstream media, even garnering the respect of the liberal moderators and commentators that she appears with. Unabashed and unafraid to defend her positions, or those of others she supports, this individual would provide the RNC with a strong and recognizable voice, albeit one that the DNC would attempt to attack en masse, but one who could handle the attack.

So, if I were to have a say in the appointment of a replacement for Michael Steele, my vote would go to:

Elizabeth Perry

(but she is usually referred to as Liz Cheney)

Martha Coakley is running for the Senate seat that Sen. Ted Kennedy occupied for nearly five decades. She is in the lead for the January 19th special election.

In light of the attacks on Gov. Sarah Palin’s “I can see Russia from my house”, Ms. Coakley’s explanation of her foreign policy experience makes one wonder where Tina Fey and MSNBC are right now:

Martha Coakley is the front-runner for the Dem nomination for Ted Kennedy’s old Senate seat.  In a recent debate, asked about her lack of foreign policy experience, the first credential Coakley offered in response was that “I have a sister who lives overseas, and she’s been in England and now lives in the Middle East.”

NEW YORK – When President Barack Obama said the United Nations had reached “a pivotal moment,” he could just as well have been referring to his own presidency.

Both on the world stage and at home, Obama keeps asking for more, politely but firmly. But he’s still had no signature win, not the kind that would set off a chain reaction of other victories.

For the U.N., Obama is seeking global cooperation to confront the challenges of bloody conflicts, a warming planet, economic deprivation and dangerous weapons proliferation. For his presidency, he’s seeking the kind of high-fiving, powerful victory that a major health care overhaul would represent.

Power begets power, and success begets success, and no one knows this better than Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. “In politics, power is not static,” he said in an interview Wednesday with PBS’ Charlie Rose. “As you use it, if you’re successful, it accumulates to achieve other goals.”

O’S AMATEUR HOUR

APPEASING ISLAMISTS IN TURKEY

THE real climax of President Obama’s Spring Apologies Tour wasn’t his photo op with our troops in Baghdad or even his “American Guilt” concerts in Western Europe.

While fans in the press cheered wildly at every venue, the real performance came in Turkey. And it was a turkey.

Obama means well. Just as Jimmy Carter, his policy godfather, meant well. But the road to embassy takeovers and strategic humiliation is paved with good intentions — coupled with distressing naivete.

On every stage, Obama draped Lady Liberty in sackcloth and ashes, drawing plentiful applause but no serious economic or security cooperation in return. Then, in Turkey, he surrendered our national pride, undercut our interests and interfered in matters that aren’t his business.
