Cuban Community on Calle Ocho and Elsewhere Are not Thrilled with the Estefan’s $30400/ Couple Funraiser with Obama on Tax Day

Estefans’ new collaboration hits sour note
By JACKIE BUENO SOUSA
jsousa@MiamiHerald.com
If Gloria Estefan decides to sing a tune while hosting President Barack Obama at her home Thursday, she may want to consider her 1989 hit Cuts Both Ways.
‘Cause you and I are dangerousThe Estefans may have broken more than a rule when they decided to host a cocktail reception for the president during his visit to South Florida on Thursday. Estefan, along with husband Emilio, also broke a bond that had united them with Miami’s Cuban community, whose members largely oppose the president’s agenda.
We want too much and life ain’t that way
Don’t ask for more
Don’t be a fool
Haven’t we already broken every rule
The Estefans, for their part, have implied that they’re simply using the opportunity to increase awareness about the Cuban people’s plight. What’s more, they note that they believe in supporting good candidates regardless of party.
They would have a convincing argument except for one very important detail: The event isn’t merely a conversation about Cuba with the president while sipping a cortadito. Nor is it designed to raise funds for a particular cause or candidate they support.
They are hosting a $30,400-a-couple fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee, and, by extension, helping to fund the entire Democratic Party agenda. It’s a proactive, partisan stance that goes well beyond, say, deciding to sing at a presidential inauguration or accepting a presidential appointment to oversee a nonpartisan cause.
Mention the Estefans and many no longer conjure up images of freedom and catchy tunes. Now — rightly or wrongly — many associate the name with Obamacare, abortion, powerful unions, creation of a welfare state.
The event also means the Estefans are helping to promote Democratic Party candidates, regardless of whether a particular candidate espouses ideas they would support. In other words, the decision to hold the fundraiser is the opposite of their stated belief of being nonpartisan when it comes to choosing our leaders.

Of course, the Estefans can try to assert their belief in partisan neutrality by holding a high-profile fundraiser in the future for the Republican Party. Such a move, however, likely would be viewed as little more than an attempt at damage control. That being the case, Gloria Estefan’s hit Seal Our Fate may be the appropriate song for Thursday’s event.
Surely, you say, it’s not as bad asThe announcement that they would host the fundraiser for the president was only hours old when I started hearing friends and relatives talk about throwing away all their Gloria Estefan CDs. Soon bloggers were labeling them as traitors. In one swoop, all the good will they had built with so many followers, all the years of supporting nonpartisan causes such as freedom and human rights, seemed to disappear. In many ways, that’s not fair to the couple, who have done so many good things to help our community.
You make it sound
If we make a mistake
You can always turn it back around….
Before you know it’s gotten way out of hand
In ways that you had never dreamed of
Never worth the price you pay in the end
Yet the reaction also is a reminder that, like freedom, celebrity can be a two-edged sword, best wielded with careful forethought. The Estefans, like all celebrities, have the right to support a particular candidate, to support a particular cause. Just as it’s their right to support a political party.
Not supporting the Estefans in their effort, well, that’s everyone else’s right.
It cuts both ways.

A Decade Later: Elian Gonzalez
April 5, 2010 in Campaign 2008, Campaign 2010, Campaign 2012, Capitalism, Economy, Family values, Politics, socialism, Uncategorized | Tags: AG Eric Holder, AG Janet Reno, Cuba, Elian Gonzalez, Fidel Castro, Union of Young Communists | 4 comments

He was the young boy whose mother risked everything to bring him out of the control of Fidel Castro, and somewhere in the escape, she lost her life. His father’s struggle to bring him back to Cuba caused months of debate.

Attorney General Janet Reno, with present AG Eric Holder as her right-hand man, was criticized for the “guns drawn” manner in which he was taken from his Miami-family’s home. In the end, despite the ideology of Communism versus Freedom, he was reunited with his father, as he rightfully needed to be ( Brazil should have returned Sean Goldman to his father in the same manner recently, without the several year battle).

Today, a decade after the international custody exchange, Elian Gonzalez, under the watchful idea of the Castro regime, is now 16, and an active member of Castro’s Union of Young Communists.

Obama a Marxist? You Decide

Read this detailed analysis of Marxism, and Neo-Marxism from American Thinker, then you decide if we ae on the right path:
This article offers the basic teachings of Karl Marx, so readers may judge themselves whether these might be at work influencing current Administration decisions. In the present chaotic political atmosphere, the phrase “Marxist” is tossed around without explanation. But what exactly does Marxism represent? Marx’s universe was simplistic. It presents a godless, sinister world where the powerful prey upon the weak, which can only be healed through revolution. In the resulting apocalypse, wealth is confiscated by revolutionaries so all may benefit. Private property is outlawed as enlightened leaders build a paradise of communism. But before utopia arrives, a principled assault must destroy capitalism.
Besides the above classic theory, a new approach, called Neo-Marxism, has arisen. It focuses upon cultural conversions for communism, and produces explosive fruit, such as Political Correctness, the Sexual Revolution, Global Warming, Hate Speech laws, Feminism, Multiculturalism, and Universal Health Care, etc. Critics warn reborn Marxism is exceedingly dangerous since it is delivered below the radar, and represents a devious bloodless communist assault, a polar-opposite of the violently murderous Bolshevik and Mao uprisings.

Obama’s First 100 Days are a Success

The White House is alreday patting itself on the back for the success of the first 100 days of the Obama Administration. The leftists are already saying that they were correct in their Obama assessments, and are saying that they right and the right bloggers will demean him and claim that he was in no way successful.
I for one want to congratulate the Commander-in-Chief. I for one believe he has truly succeeded and fulfilled my every thought of what I figured would occur if we handed him the keys to the White House:
He has succeeded at spending more of the taxpayers money than all 43 Presidents before him COMBINED.
He has established his civilian army that will be utilized, at taxpayer expense, to secure his re-election, and eventually serve as his brown-shirt brigade in the socialist society he has successfully directed us toward.
He has single-handedly undermined the yeras of intelligence gathering that has kept us secure since 9/11, all to satisfy George Soros.
He has successfully lowered our position in the world, bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia, and extolling us as a non-Christian nation.
He has successfully appointed a Cabinet that is so superior in their qualifications that their tax problems are overlooked, as well as their naivete and incompetence. Geithner and Napolitano are just the two “high profile” examples.
He has successfully committed us, our children, and the unborn next generaton to a debtor’s existence that will dampen the entreprenuerial spirit that created this great Nation.
But his greatest accomplishment is, that, as he promised, he has united us….. although it is not in the manner that he had foreseen. To the contrary, he has sparked a swelling of national pride, that he and the Mrs. seem to lack, an allegiance to THIS COUNTRY, to THIS PEOPLE, to the AMERICAN CITIZENS, and we are at the precipice of history far greater than the “historical” election that occurred last November. He has successfully motivated an AMERICAN MOVEMENT that will reclaim AMERICA from the tyranny that he has forged it toward in these few short 100 days!!
Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) has Harsh Words for Obama regarding Cuba, Castro, and Chavez

Policy Changes with regard to Syria, Iran, and Cuba: Obama wastes no time in diminishing the U.S.

As originally being reported by TheObamaFile.com, the new Administration is in the process of lifting sanctions against the terrorist-sponsoring countries of Syria and Iran, and Democrats have introduced a bill in Congress to allow practically unrestricted travel to Cuba.
From JihadWatch.org:
Syria has been listed by the State Department as among the State Sponsors of Terrorism since December 29, 1979. Is Obama going to remove that designation? On what grounds?
“Obama preparing to lift sanctions against Syria,” from the World Tribune, February 9 (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
NICOSIA — President Barack Obama has decided on a new U.S. ambassador to Syria and is expected to lift sanctions against a nation charged with aiding Al Qaida in Iraq and secretly building a nuclear reactor with North Korean assistance.Diplomatic sources said Obama, in consultation with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has asked Frederic Hof to become the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since 2005. The sources said Hof, a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Middle East Policy Council, agreed to take the post.
“There will be an announcement very soon,” a diplomat said.
The sources said the Obama administration was expected to suspend U.S. sanctions on Syria’s military and energy programs.
Why? [emphasis in original]
Great question. Forbes.com reports that the Commerce Department has already waived sanctions on Syria. Even worse, from the GatewayPundit…
This latest news comes from the February 18, 2009 edition of Geostrategy Direct(subscribers only):
DOSSIER: Ehud Barak
‘Change’ the mullahs can believe in: Obama to drop sanctions on IranTEL AVIV — Israelis may have gone to the polls hoping for “Change” but the status quo is all any of the candidates could look forward to whatever the outcome. Defense Minister Ehud Barack, has already glimpsed the future and has warned about what it holds. …
Barak has already signaled what the new government can expect, officials here said.
The United States has abandoned its policy of sanctioning companies that aid Iran’s nuclear and missile program, they said.
The officials said the new Obama administration of has decided to end sanctions against Iranian government agencies or companies that aid Teheran’s missile and nuclear program. The officials said Israel has been informed of the new U.S. policy.
“We were told that sanctions do not help the new U.S. policy of dialogue with Iran,” an official said.
Barak confirmed the new U.S. policy. In an address to the Herzliya Conference on Feb. 3, Barak said Washington did not say whether it would resume sanctions against Iran.
“We must arrive at a strategic understanding with the United States over Iran’s military nuclear program and ensure that even if at this time they opt for the diplomatic option, it will only last a short time before harsh and necessary sanctions are imposed,” Barak said.
Obama decided to end sanctions against Iran after determining that the U.S. measures had failed to block Teheran’s missile or nuclear weapons program, officials said. Under the administration of former President George Bush, the United States accelerated sanctions on Iran in 2008. …
A U.S. defense source said the White House would no longer enforce sanctions imposed by the Bush administration. The source said the decision has already been relayed to Iran.
“The administration has abandoned sanctions entirely,” the U.S. source said. “It is a completely new ballgame.” …
The sources said the Obama administration was expected to suspend U.S. sanctions on Syria’s military and energy programs. [emphasis in original]
And that travel pass to Cuba?:
For the first time in 46 years, democrats hope to pass legislation to permit unrestricted travel to Cuba.
AFP reported:Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have introduced a bill to permit US citizens unrestricted travel to Cuba, according to the Library of Congress website.
The “Freedom To Travel to Cuba Act,” [HR 874] which would overturn the 46-year-old US policy strictly limiting travel to the Caribbean island, will be subject to debate after being referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The bill, introduced by Massachusetts Democrat Bill Delahunt and backed by eight other lawmakers, states that “the President may not regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or legal residents.”
Currently US nationals are supposed to request Treasury Department permission to visit Cuba.
No wonder Fidel Castro is writing strange letters to fellow revolutionary Rahm Emanuel. [emphasis in original]
The last link RE: Fidel is pretty interesting as well, even though it’s more of an overview of how the Cuban leadership apparently views the Administration (read: they likely welcome the same kind of treatment that Syria and Iran are getting).
I have to concur with GatewayPundit on this:
It’s like watching Carter on Speed.
For our nation’s sake, I hope it only gets as bad as things were with former President Carter’s Administration.

Eric Holder Attorney General confirmation may be a “Bumpy Ride”
January 15, 2009 in Campaign 2008, Campaign 2010, Campaign 2012, Capitalism, Economy, Family values, Politics, socialism, Terrorism, Uncategorized | Tags: Bill Ayers, civil right movement, Cuba, Dept. of Justice, Elian Gonzalez, Eric Holder, Fidel Castro, Gov. George Wallace, Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Judicial Watch, Mark Rich, President Elect Barack Obama, Sen. Arlen Specter, Sen. Leahy | 3 comments
From the moment that President Elect Barack Obama announced his appointment of Eric Holder to be Attorney General, there has been a flurry of dissent about the former Clinton appointee, and the controversies that have dogged him since the Clinton administration. As his confirmation hearings begin today before the Senate Judiciary Committee, his confirmation may not be off track completely, but the Republicans, and some Democrats, are not going to give Holder an easy ride through the process.
Holder’s involvement in key problems in the Attorney General’s office during the Clinton era include:
- The controversial pardon of fugitive financier Mark Rich, and questionable contributions from Rich’s ex-wife.
- The pardons of the FLNA and some of the Weather Underground (the same group that Bill Ayers was involved with)
- the decision to seize 6-year old Cuban refugee Elian Gonzalez at gunpoint from his uncle’s Miami home to return him to his father in Cuba
- ties to embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich

Judicial Watch has actively campaigned against the confirmation of Eric Holder, contacting the Senators, and taking out a full page advertisement to urge the same.
In his opening remarks, Eric Holder used the story of Governor George Wallace’s refusal to permit Holder’s late sister-in-law admittance to college in Alabama during the civil rights movement, and then her actual admission to the University of Alabama. (If we are to rejoice in the election of Obama as a biracial President, is it not time that we cease using past history that will continue to create racial division). As the statements and the questioning has started, Holder has acknowledged some of his Clinton actions as possible mistakes, and he has also defined waterboarding as torture. (The Obama administration needs to tread lightly in that area, because our national security can be undermined with the utterance of a few misguided words).
Sen. Arlen Specter, the ranking Republican on the committee, criticized both Holder and Sen. Leahy in his opening remarks, and basically guaranteed that this process was not going to be an easy one. Quipped one member of the Obama transition team “Hope you brought your dinner!!”

Welcome to Guantanomo Bay
December 18, 2008 in Uncategorized | Tags: 9-11 terrorist attack, Communist cuba, Fidel Castro, GITMO, Guantanomo Bay, President Elect Barack Obama | 3 comments
Many decades ago, my father was stationed at Guantanomo Bay, Cuba, at a time when Cuba revelled in being the “Riviera of the Caribbean”. Today, after nearly a half century under a Communist dictator, the island is a shell of its former beauty. Sitting at one end, the United States continues to maintain its military base.

So as we began to enter the war on terror, seeking out Osama bin Laden, the enemy combattants that the United States was able to identify and capture were brought to GITMO while it was determined how to proceed legally against these enemy combattants.
GITMO became a campaign topic, as Barack Obama vowed to close the detention center at GITMO, sending detainees back to their homeland or bringing them to the US for trial, where the ACLU would jump at the opportunity to defend those who were a part of the 9-11 terrorist attack on US soil.
Having been elected President, and having received his national security briefings (remember, as President, Obama does NOT have to pass the security clearances that the rest of us would have to go through for a job in any of the governmental departments), Obama has begun to reconsider his position on GITMO. Adding to his dilemna is the fact that several of the detainees want to plead guilty to their role in terrorists attacks, to be sentenced to death, and to be a martyr for their cause.
Thoughts on the pros and cons of Guantanomo Bay??
