Obviously the tragedy in Tucson is at the news forefront because it involved the attempted murder of a sitting United States Congresswoman, the murder of two federal officials (Judge Roll and Gabe Zimmerman), as well as 4 others. Add to the story now the left-wing man who was one of the injured victims of the shooting who was arrested for making death threats at a special town hall orgainzed by ABC for Christiane Amapour’s Sunday broadcast (he is now under 72 hour psychiatric evaluation).
But from the tragedy emerges hope—- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords continues to make remarkable strides in her recovery, though she is not “out of the woods” yet and has a long road to recovery. The doctors removed the breathing tube today, taking her off the ventilator.
From the tragedy word comes today that “Life” emerges. The young victim who has symbolized the sense of national tragedy, 9-year old Christina Taylor Green, will now be the hope, the life, the renewal of life for others. It was announced that Roxanna and John Green, in their moment of tragic loss, made that great decision to donate their daughter’s organs.
“She wanted to make a difference in her life. She wanted to make her mark, and she did so in so powerful a way that even she cannot imagine,” the priest said at her funeral, when mention was made of the organ donations. John Green stated on CNN that they have been informed that a young girl in the Boston area received Christina’s donation.
While Christina has become the face of the tragedy, I believe that in her brother, Dallas, and in her classmates at Mesa Verde Elementary, they are the face of the aftermath of the tragedy. They are the face of innocence lost. They are the face for each family in this tragedy….. they mourn a loss that they are not yet even old enough to understand (hell, as adults, we have a hard time with it), and that their parents struggle to explain, explaining the incomprehensible.
