DNC’s McAuliffe is Worried about a GOP takeover in Governor Mansions; Disastrous to Dems and “Redistricting”

Former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe is warning that GOP wins in governors races this fall could be a “disaster” for the Democratic Party.
In a fundraising email sent out the Democratic Governors Association’s supporters list, McAuliffe said that if Republicans are able to win a solid number of the 37 governorships open in 2010, they could redistrict up to 30 congressional seats into the GOP’s control.
“In almost every state, governors play a pivotal role in deciding where congressional lines are drawn — and we know that Republicans won’t hesitate to abuse that power,” wrote McAuliffe, who ran unsuccessfully for his party’s gubernatorial nomination in Virginia last year. “If we don’t stop them now, we could see 25 to 30 congressional seats falling into GOP hands in 2012 without voters even knowing what happened.”
“No wonder the chairman of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, has been declaring that the GOP’s comeback starts with the governors,” he added. “More Republican governors = more GOP congressional districts = more obstructionism = disaster in the making.”
