WSJ: Mad Mad Martha!!

James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal has a column today, which he prefaces with the fact that today is a federal holiday, and the WSJ does not usually publish on holidays. That’s how important the Special Election in Massachusetts is:
By JAMES TARANTO
(Editor’s note: We don’t usually publish on Martin Luther King Day but are making an exception this year to bring you this special update on the Massachusetts Senate campaign.)
“Some Democrats are worried [Martha] Coakley has been too methodical in the six-week sprint to Tuesday’s special election,” the Associated Press reports, referring to the Democratic nominee for the Senate seat that Ted Kennedy held until his death.
Coakley seems to be taking this criticism to heart, because lately she has been acting CRA-ZEEE! In an interview with Ken Pittman, a host at New Bedford’s WBSM-AM, she said that Catholics “probably shouldn’t work in the emergency room.” The Gelnmary Research Center reports (see table 6, page 2) that as of 2000, 48.7% of Massachues and Massachusettes were Catholic–a slight decline from 49.2% in 1990, but still enough to make Massachusetts the most Catholic state other than Rhode Island. According to exit polls, 53% of Massachusetts voters in 2008 were Catholic. Supporting invidious discrimination against roughly half the state’s voters would seem a decidedly unmethodical way of winning an election.

The Beer Summit was moved from the picnic table to the Rose Garden, and someone today realized that the big photo-op could go wrong if they didn’t employ some feng shus. Thus, the gaffable Vice President was added to the mix, providing the necessary balance!

Obama Starts Daily Press Briefing with a “Non-Apology Apology”

Just several hours after the Cambridge Police took umbrage with the words and rhetoric of Pres. Barack Obama with regard to the arrest of his friend Prof. Henry Gates of Harvard.
Obama says that his choice of words at his press conference were perhaps wrong, and led to the appearance of a maligning of Sgt. Crowley and the Cambridge Police, but he defends his position of how a black man was handled in this situation.
The President stressed that both the Sgt. and the Professor are good men, caught in a situation that went awry, perhaps both overreacting.
Without saying the word “apology” or “I’m sorry”, the President has essentially issued a “Non-apology” apology. Obama does not want this race issue to continue to drown out his healthcare reform initiative.
Cambridge Police ask for Apology from Obama and Gov. Deval

Both Pres. Barack Obama and Massachusetts Dov. Patrick Deval are personally acquainted with Harvard Prof. Henry Gates, and both issued statements condemning the Cambridge Police for actions labelled as “stupid” by the President with regard to Prof. Gates’ arrest.
Both politicians prefaced their statements with the fact that they did not know all of the facts. The Cambridge Police and supporting police associations are not demanding but have asked that both men review the facts, and respond accordingly with an appropriate apology to the Cambridge Police and Sgt. Crowley.
Cambridge Police have determined that Sgt. Crowley’s actions were consistent with protocol for the department and on a national level for the circumstances as they occurred.
