NEW YORK (AP) — A national bone marrow donation registry says the rate of new registrants has more than doubled since ABC News’ Robin Roberts said that she’ll need a transplant.
The “Good Morning America” anchor is being treated for MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease. She will require a transplant this fall.
Roberts stopped by a registration drive at ABC News on Tuesday, watching co-host George Stephanopoulos and her boss, ABC News President Ben Sherwood, get swabbed to see if their bone marrow is a match for someone who needs a donation.
Jeffrey Chell, CEO of the registry Be The Match, said some 15,000 people had registered since Roberts announced her diagnosis on June 11. That’s 11,200 more than they would normally receive in that period.

Elizabeth Edwards has bravely battled her breast cancer in the public eye, and for more than half the battle, she had endured the pain and anguish caused by her husband’s infidelity, including the tabloidesque antics of his mistress and his surrogates who played the story out in the press for their own benefit.

The wife of former Senator John Edwards, once the golden boy of the Democratic Party, was recently hospitalized, but has now returned to her home, to her family. A statement from the family says that doctors have told Mrs. Edwards that any further treatments for her cancer would be “unproductive”. Sources close to the family have said that Elizabeth Edwards has returned to her “to die”, and that she has barely weeks, if not days.
From her personal Facebook page, she has posted what CBSNews has titled as her “Apparent Goodbye Message”:
“The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.”
You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope,”

Her family has gathered at her side, and it is said that her estranged husband, John Edwards, has joined them. The Edward’s daughter Cate is 28, daughter Emma Claire is 12, and son Jack is 10. (The couple’s elest child, Wade, died in 1996 at the age of 17 in a car accident).
