All the president’s Olympic cronies

When government officials play the Olympic lottery, taxpayers lose. That has been the disastrous experience of host cities around the world (Forbes magazine even dubbed the post-Olympic financial burden the “Host City Curse”). So, why are President Obama and his White House entourage headed to Copenhagen, Denmark this week to push a fiscally doomed Chicago 2016 bid? Political payback.

Bringing the games to the Windy City is Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley’s “vision.” The entrenched Democratic power-broker – in office since 1989 – would like to cap off his graft-tainted career with a glorious, $4 billion bread and circuses production. The influential Daley machine backed Barack Obama for the presidential primary. Obama lavished praise on Daley’s stewardship of the city. Longtime Daley cronies helped pave Obama’s path to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Now, they’re returning the favor for their hometown boss.

Senior White House adviser and Obama consigliere Valerie Jarrett is a Daley loyalist who worked as his deputy chief of staff, deputy corporation counsel, and planning commissioner. She hired the future First Lady of the United States, then-Michelle Robinson, as a mayoral assistant. Jarrett went on to serve as president and CEO of The Habitat Company, a real estate firm with a massive stake in federally-funded Chicago public housing projects.

Let me be clear that I’m not pleased to see the president jetting off to Copenhagen to advocate for Chicago as host of the 2016 Olympic Games when there truly is so much to be done here at home, not the least of which is a decision on whether or not he wants to augment troop levels in Afghanistan.

Of course, it should be noted that, while Barack Obama is across the Atlantic doing his best impression of Mayor Daley, Americans are being hurt and killed across the world out of need for more resources. The underlying self-serving issue at hand with regard to the Olympic bid should also be considered, and the Republicans are doing America a disservice by failing to point out that Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett’s old company, Habitat, stands to gain a whole lot of money$$$$  should the Games come to the Windy City.

Since that Aug. 30 date, a total of 43 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines have died in a war that is now the subject of much discussion–and apparently some confusion–in Washington. Forty-two of those casualties have been identified by name in U.S. Defense Department press releases (see below), while the 43rd casualty, which occurred today, has been confirmed in press reports, but not by name.

Government contract databases show no record of the company. Security industry representatives and federal officials said they had never heard of it. On its Web site, the company lists as its headquarters a building in Washington near the White House that holds “virtual offices.” A spokeswoman for the building said American Police Force never completed its application to use the address.”

Even MSNBC is writing about it!  It sounds like this American Police Force, private security company was hired to run the prison, but there are no prisoners, and they say they’re not taking Guantanamo prisoners.  The problem is they’ve suddenly taken over police duties of Hardin, and fired the the Sherriff Dept.

“In Santa Ana, American Police Force occupies a single suite on the second floor of a two-story office building. During a visit to the location Thursday, a reporter for The Associated Press encountered a uniformed man behind a desk who would identify himself only as “Captain Michael.

“The man declined to discuss basic details about the company and referred the reporter to the company’s Web site. In a subsequent phone interview, he provided his surname but insisted it not be used because of security concerns. The man said he was a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Montenegro with decades of experience in military and law enforcement operations. “

The man said his boss is a retired U.S. Army colonel named Richard Culver who is currently overseas. Culver’s role with the company could not be immediately verified.

The company claim of a headquarters address is just up the street from the White House.

The K Street building houses “virtual offices,” where clients pay to use the prestigious Pennsylvania Avenue address and gain access to onsite conference rooms but have no permanent presence.

“It lets small businesses get started up and have a professional front and not have a lot of a cash to do it,” said Ashley Korner with Preferred Offices, which leases the location.

She said American Police Force’s application to use the address was pending, but incomplete. “

Do you want to have the ability to see your doctor on the same day you call? Would you like your doctor to make “house calls’  (they really did come to your home at one time)? For a fee, like an attorney’s retainer fee, doctors and hospitals have begun marketing “concierge” medicine:

Picture this: You receive a letter from your doctor thanking you for your loyalty. But, she says, you’ll need to pay $1,500 a year if you still want to be her patient.

The arrangement, one that’s gaining popularity, is called concierge medicine. In return for an annual retainer, you get extra time and 24-hour phone access to your doctor, without an insurance company butting in. Concierge medicine is a way to cut out insurance companies and reduce workload, proponents say.

Existing patients are faced with the question: Is it worth it?

“It’s absolutely, totally worth it,” says Mickey Austin of Weston. “It was almost a non-decision.”

This is capitalism at its best, filling a niche in the marketplace. With the push in Congress for universal healthcare, these types of services may contiune to grow. Concierge medicine will keep a disparity in healthcare.

Sarah Palin: “Going Rogue”

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 28, 2009 05:52 PM

The AP reports that Sarah Palin’s memoir will be published on Nov. 17.

The title is “Going Rogue” — an allusion to the in-fighting between Team Sarah and the McCainiancs that broke out in the last weeks of the campaign.

Should be quite a compelling read.

Abandoner in Chief, Part II

Despicable even by this administration’s standards, the White House has decided  to increase the financial burden on aging Alaskan World War II veterans by excising pension money from its outlined priorities for a new military appropriations bill. From McClatchy:

In a strongly worded message to Congress outlining its priorities for a military spending bill, the Obama administration today said it disapproved of including money for pensions for 26 elderly members of the World War II-era Alaska Territorial Guard.

The Guardsmen are among those assigned to protect Alaska from the Japanese during World War II.

The Army decided this year to no longer count service in the Guard in calculating the military’s 20-year minimum for retirement pay, although it still counts for military benefits. As a result, their pensions were decreased in January.

An estimated 300 members are still living from the original 6,600-member unit formed in 1942 to protect Alaska, then a territory, from attack. The 26 men have enough other military service to reach the 20-year minimum for retirement pay but would lose it if the Territorial Guard service doesn’t count.
