Even in times of a recession, couples try to keep their relationships strong, even if it means having to cut back on the usuals. For the average American family, that might mean renting a DVD instead of going to the movie theater.
But for the Obama’s, America’s First Couple (Barack wore jeans and a polo shirt to Malia’s soccer game today, if you care!), is setting the example for the American public in a visible way. So for tonight’s “date night”, the Obama’s have opted to not use Air Force One to take them to dinner in New York City, but instead use one of the “smaller” jets in the fleet, a Gulfstream. Of course, there are the obligatory helicopter flights, and the accompanying fighter jets.
So we have:
Plane ride to New York City: at least $100,000
Dinner and Theater tickets: $500-600
Example for Recession cutbacks: Priceless
Oh, to be fair, the Obama’s will be reimbursing the taxpayers an amount equivalent to two round trip tickets DC to NYC!

I sure would like to get the taxpayers to pay for a “date” with my wife. I suppose when you “rule” you don’t have to make any sacrifices.

The President talks about “carbon footprints” and how everyone has to make some sacrifices, and then he goes and does stupid stuff like this.
“The perks of the presidency include air travel.” You are right, however when the President is supposed to set the example for the citizens of the Country, and then he does stuff like this, or when he talks about not going to Vegas for Conventions (which would be a “perk” of some businesses) and then he goes out there for a fund raiser, is just hypocritical.
That seems to be the pattern of this Administration, say something, and then do exactly the opposite.
I read somewhere that Obama’s supporters are such idiots, here they are putting kids to bed hungry, because they are having to stretch their funds, and Obama is throwing his “perks” in their face.
stothes, don’t you realize that the Country is broke? We don’t have the money to be paying for these “perks” no matter how small you might think they are.

I faxed the Chief of Staff to reserve the Gulfstream IV for next Saturday night. Thought me and the wife would like to travel to Vegas for the weekend. After all, those planes do belong to us….. we just let Obama use them.

She couldn’t give up DATE NIGHT? He couldn’t give up his SOCIAL LIFE?

OK, I will not defend the Obama’s, because in these economic times, Kobe beef on Wednesday nights and an afternoon jaunt to NYC does not send the correct message. On the otherhand, given the GLOBE stories on their sexuality, the “handlers” are trying hard to make sure they appear as the “loving” couple. Additionally, whether there is any truth to it or not, we will never know, but Kennedy lore has it that Jackie sent one of her Secret Service agents back to the White House for her diaphragm…. from Italy!
