This is what we have to look forward to during the coming weeks. The AP is reporting that Ashley Todd, the 20 year old McCain campaign worker, “made up” the attack story that even included her “attacker” carving the letter “B” into her face.
On the other side, we have the Rev. Jesse Jackson pressing the issue that if Barack Obama does not win the Presidency on November 4th, pledges of civil disobedience and uprising WILL occur:

Jessie Jackson has reportedly signed an online petition pledging “civil disobedience” while other civil rights activists are calling for a government shutdown if John McCain wins the US Presidential elections on November 4th.
Calling a McCain victory “theft”, writer David Swanson tells Obama supporters, “You should immediately pick up your pre-packed bags and head straight to the White House in Washington, D.C., which we will surround and shut down until this attempt at a third illegitimate presidency is reversed.”

Jesse Jackson marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. This would not be his message! Have we learned nothing from our history, or are we destined to repeat it?

AP reported the fact that she made up the attack. You’d have them follow your lead of only reporting items that seem to support your point of view even if they are fabricated?
It is painful to watch how this campaign has turned otherwise intelligent folks on the right into babbling conspiracy theorists. Much of the trouble comes from confusing *possibility* with probability. It is possible Obama is a 5000 year old alien entity trapped in a human body who seeks to deploy a dangerous form of extraterrestrial communism on unsuspecting herds of gullible Democrats. However, that is unlikely.
My greatest concern is that the massive smear campaign – mostly against Obama – will fuel the kind of violent polarization we’ve seen in the past in our great country. The challenges facing the USA are substantial both economically and geopolitically. We don’t have to face them together, but it would certainly help.
